On Meditation

On Meditation

Lingering at the lush edge of sleep,
I struggle not to stray
from the meditative moment;
unconsciousness
calls to me between
the gentle in … out
of breath. Thoughts arise like dreams
and then recede
below the soft watery surface;
consciousness deceives me.
Then, as if on cue,
beckoned by the second,
the harsh tones
of a digital alarm rouse me
and I once again receive the dwindling day.
